In Our Hour of Death

To die a good or holy death is to die in the State of Grace. It is the greatest happiness attainable.

To die a bad death is to die in a State of Mortal Sin. It is the worst calamity that can befall us, one that lasts for eternity.

Image Explanation

The Top Half shows someone dying in The State of Grace or Sanctifying Grace. Since this person has "persevered to the end," "kept the faith," or "finished the race," as St. Paul said, they are inclined to receive the prayers of their family and the final blessing of the Priest. Their Guardian Angel is preparing to escort this person to be judged by Our Lord.

The Bottom Half shows someone dying in a State of Mortal Sin or separated from God's Grace, which will result in spiritual death or going to Hell.  Since this person has rejected repentance and conversion of heart, they are inclined to reject prayers and blessings. It is likely they have surrounded themselves with other like-minded people who may be mourning, but they are not actually praying for their loved one. We can see that this person's Guardian Angel has despaired and turned away, while the devils prepare to escort him to Hell after his particular judgement from Our Lord.

We read in Psalms 33:22 that "the death of the wicked is very evil." Many people associate those who are wicked or evil with only those who do the worst of the worst crimes like murder, but when God is infinitely good, infinitely loving, infinitely holy, pure, just, etc., then ALL SIN is infinitely offensive and evil in the Eyes of God.

While all sin is infinitely evil and offensive to God, God is also infinitely merciful and through His boundless love for us, He established through His Church and Scripture that there are certain sins that have been deemed as Mortal Sin  and other sins deemed as Venial Sin.

Many people may never want to expose their children to an image like this piece that depicts demons and a horrible final death, but it would be far worse to keep a child sheltered away from God's Truth.

Instead, we should be like Queen Blanche of Castile, mother of St. Louis IX, who told Louis, "I love you, my dear son, as much as a mother can love her child; but I would rather see you dead at my feet than that you should ever commit a mortal sin." And likewise, the powerful St. Rita, who prayed to God to spare and kill her two sons, so that they may not be able to accomplish the sin of murder that they were planning to do.

And while it seems unfathomable to wish for the death of their child, it would be better than spiritual death and to be separated from them and God for all eternity.
