St. Aloysius Gonzaga

Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, a model of purity, charity, prayer, steadfastness, suffering, and penance.

He will intercede on your behalf to God, if you struggle with lust, temptation, or any other special intention.

Image Explanation

Born in 1568, Aloysius was chosen by his father to become a great military leader. At the age of 5, Aloysius was sent out to learn and train the ways of war with some three thousand other soldiers. During this time, Aloysius learned to use bad language, but the first moment of his return home, his tutor reprimanded him of the bad use of his tongue, which caused great shame and ultimately led Aloysius to a profound conversion at age 7.

At this time, Aloysius began saying the Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Seven Penitential Psalms, and other devotions, while he was always on his knees without support or a cushion.

With the continued pressures of his father and growing up in a society of fraud, poison, and lust, Aloysius had a strong inclination towards evil, especially the temptation of lust. He began to practice self-discipline to preserve his chastity by never directly looking straight at any woman.

He was always in physical pain for suffering from a rare kidney disease, but along with these physical sufferings, he fasted three days a week on bread and water. He would also scourge himself with a dog whip, and at every midnight, he would get up to pray on a stone floor without cushion for his knees for an hour's worth of Mental Prayer.

Aloysius's strong conversion and dedication towards a life of penance and sacrifice as well as Aloysius becoming a Jesuit Priest eventually led to the conversion of his father before his death. Aloysius died at the age of just 23 years old by a 3 month long fever.
