The Path to Heaven
This is a must have image to have showcased year round, not just as a reminder and model for following closely the Liturgical Calendar, but also for education of the family and conversation with guests!
Image Explanation
Different from the Ten Commandments, this image depicts the 2nd, 3rd, & 5th Commandments or Precepts of the Church, which are:
To go to Confession at Least Once a Year
To Receive the Blessed Sacrament at Least Once a Year on Easter
To Provide for the Needs of the Church
The Top Right Scene going downward shows us a series of small pictures representing the various Feasts of the Church. You can see the faithful "observing" these feasts with reverence and devotion.
The Bottom Right Scene shows the Old Testament Feast of the Paschal Lamb, where those who ate the flesh and marked their doors with the blood were spared from the avenging angel. (Exodus 12:29) This is a prefigure of the Sacrament of the Most Holy Eucharist, which was instituted by Jesus Christ at the last Supper where we can receive His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity to purify our body and strengthen our souls to avoid Hell.
The Bottom Left Scene shows how the Sacrament of Confession has been practiced since the Apostles, for St. Paul says, "Many of them that believes, came confessing and declaring their deeds". (Acts 19:18)
As well as, in the Gospel of John, "On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” (John 20:19-23)
The Middle Scene shows those who do not keep the Commandments of the Church or the Commandments of God eventually will take the Path to Hell by observing the pleasures of the World, Flesh, and Devil.
Finally, we can see the faithful entering the Narrow Gate and through the Season of Lent, Penances, Mortification, Confession, and receiving the Body of Christ at the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
“Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few." (Matthew 7:13-14)
