The Sacrament of Confirmation
Confirmation is the Sacrament where we receive the Holy Ghost and His Seven Gifts.
Image Explanation
The Gift of Wisdom makes us appreciate and love the things of Heaven.
The Gift of Understanding opens our eyes to the mysteries of our Faith.
The Gift of Counsel enables us to correctly discern what brings the most Glory to God and our Salvation.
The Gift of Fortitude infuses into our souls the strength and courage to face the devil and rebuke his temptations.
The Gift of Knowledge helps us to discern God's Divine Will.
The Gift of Piety inclines us to reverently perform all of our religious duties with devotion.
The Gift of Fear of the Lord fills with with reverence and love for God along with a Holy Fear of offending Him.
Just as the Samarians needed St. Peter and St. John to Confirm them with the Holy Ghost, so too, the Catholic Bishops as the successors of the Apostles are the ordinary ministers of Confirmation.
The Main Scene shows St. Peter and St. John confirming the faithful in Samaria by laying their hands on them. The man in the back walking down the steps holding a bag of money is Simon the Magician, who came to St. Peter in an attempt to purchase the power of conferring the Holy Ghost. (Acts 8:20)
The Top Left Scene shows a soldier who has been confirmed, which enabled him to fight with Fortitude the "Seven-Headed Dragon" or the temptations and snares of the devil.
The Top Right Scene shows a child who boldly declares himself to be a Christian under thread of persecution before a pagan judge.
The Bottom Scene shows the Sacrament of Confirmation as we have it today, 2000 years after Our Lord founded His Church upon the Rock of St. Peter.
